7 Shocking Things You Didn't Know About Working At Amazon

2. Conditions Have Been Compared To That Of A "Sweat Shop" (And It's Hot!)

Amazon 6 Granted, here's a controversial issue that Amazon actively set out to correct when it was brought to their attention, but the fact that it even happened in the first place and that measures weren't taken prior to it become a major "incident" are highly suspect. Warehouses being warehouses, then, it will probably come as no surprise to anyone with a brain that it can get pretty hot inside these things - but surely Amazon had procedures in place to ensure that its employees were looked after and were fit to cope with the extreme conditions brought on by their jobs? Apparently not. In 2011, former workers from Amazon's Breinigsville, Pennsylvania warehouse were interviewed about their experience working for the company, many of whom claimed that workers were regularly fainting inside the warehouse due to the frankly insane heat and were being shipped out in ambulances. Eventually Amazon took the blame and ended up spending $52 million on air-conditioning for its warehouses, but it took almost a year for this result to occur. I don't imagine anyone who bought anything from Amazon over this period ever wondered about the warehouse conditions, but they weren't pretty, and workers spent a lot of time suffering as a result of poor management.
