A few years ago, the number of people who were aware of the concept of a Dyson Sphere was limited to geeks and experts. Ever since the snappily named KIC 8462852 star hit the headlines, however, the term has moved into the mainstream.

When astronomers first pointed their telescopes at KIC 8462852, they noticed that it was behaving very oddly indeed. They found that the star was not only rapidly dimming and brightening, but also that its overall brightness was gradually dropping.

When the odd behaviour was first noticed, some thought that there was a possibility that it could be a Dyson Sphere - an artificial structure constructed around a star by an advanced alien species to harvest its power.

Now, we have so far had any positive confirmation that the anomaly is a Dyson Sphere, but at the same time, we have no reason to completely rule it out just yet.
