This is a rumour that got some major traction in the press, due to the generally reliable source of the leak but was ultimately debunked very quickly by the major Apple commentators around the world. A source in the Chinese manufacturing industry who is well known for being accurate about Apple products released a statement in 2013 about the iPhone Math, a larger version of the phone with a screen somewhere between 4.8 inches and 5.5 inches in size, with a view to attract Chinese customers as well as act as a "Phablet", bridging the gap between a phone and a tablet. The principle is sound, the Chinese have loved oversized screens on their phones for a long time, something which prompted the current wave of large screen phones from Asian manufacturers (the Samsung Galaxy Mega, anyone?) and given the reliable source, it ended up widely reported worldwide as a surprise move from Apple that could happen. Here's the problem though, Apple doesn't do surprise moves, every move is calculated and informed, but more over, in 2012 Apple had just increased the size of the screen with the iPhone 5 and in the process hit some severe manufacturing issues in increasing the screen size while maintaining their signature "Retina" pixel density. Furthermore, in 2012 they also released the iPad Mini, which for all intents and purposes could fit that Phablet gap, especially considering some phones are coming worryingly close to having a seven inch screen just like the iPad Mini. Lastly, the leaked report said the iPhone Maths would be released in the summer of 2013, outside of Apple's release schedules, something which Apple never does. It was a nice idea, but ultimately it was never going to happen, despite the amount of people who bought into the idea.
