8. Webdriver Torso
In 2014, online sleuths noticed that a YouTube account called Webdriver Torso was uploading with insane regularity, yet none of the videos seemed to make sense. Theories about the channel's purpose varied wildly, with some even speculating that it was a government sending encrypted messages for the sake of espionage.
However, a now-deleted Reddit account claimed to have gotten to the bottom of the mystery, linking the channel to YouTube's parent company, Google.
Google actually eventually responded to the mounting speculation surrounding Webdriver Torso, explaining that the videos were used to determine to what extent the technical quality of videos had suffered when they were uploaded to the site, when compared to the originals. The company even showed a sense of humour by rickrolling the curious online investigators with their statement.
