If you thought your gut was crawling, that's nothing to your belly button.

Everybody's navel is different, but they have one thing in common, and it's that they're teeming with bacterial life, some of which is so exotic that scientists had trouble identifying it.

In one study, scientists swabbed 60 different belly buttons and found a whopping 2,368 species of bacteria, 1,458 of which are thought to be completely new to science.

The types of bacteria ranged far and wide, with one subject harbouring a bacterium that has only previously been found in the soil of Japan, and another was playing host to an extremophile that is more commonly found in ice caps and thermal vents.

Everybody's belly button flora is unique to them, so in the future, you could well be using your navel bugs as a form of identity.
