8 Harry Potter Edits JK Rowling Made From Earlier Book Drafts

3. Dean Thomas Was A Prominent Character

Though Dean is very much a tertiary character during the Harry Potter series, this wasn't always the case. Throughout the books Dean is mentioned here and there, joining Dumbledore's Army, playing as a Chaser in Quidditch and being captured and held at Malfoy Manor.

Initially, though, Rowling had written quite a lot of information about Dean. Had this been published, it's like this would have lead to him developing into a much more prominent character in the subsequent books. Most of this information on Dean appeared in a chapter in the first draft of Chamber Of Secrets. "My editor thought that chapter was too long and pruned everything that he thought was surplus to requirements. When it came to the casting on the film version of 'Philosopher's Stone', however, I told the director, Chris, that Dean was a black Londoner. In fact, I think Chris was slightly taken aback by the amount of information I had on this peripheral character."
