8 More Science Facts To Make You Sound Clever At Parties

5. "If You Took All The Space Out Of The Atoms In Mt. Everest..."

"...it would rip you apart." Aha, bet you thought I was going to say something like "it would fit in a teacup", didn't you? (is what you should say gleefully at your crowd of listeners) Anyway, a popular "mind blowing fact" that is often brought out by smug people at parties, is that atoms are mostly made of nothing, and so if you were to remove all of the empty space from them, then you could do things like compact the human race into a sugar cube. If you do it to a star, you get a neutron star about the size of a city. However, if you were to actually smoosh Mt. Everest into a teacup, it would become so unbelievably dense that the gravity well it would generate would be so extreme that it would probably rip you apart if you got too close. It would exert seven orders of magnitude more force on you than the Earth currently is (note, that's107 times as much, not 7 times), but only if you got very close to it. Now how's that for a bit of one-upmanship on the dude who wheels out the "if you took the empty space out of atoms" fact?
