There are supposedly numerous ghosts that are haunting the castle keep in Newcastle, but the Poppy Girl is probably the most tragic out of all of them. Situated next to the High Level bridge of the Newcastle side of the Tyne, the castle keep is a medieval creation which was used for defensive purposes and it was built by Malcolm Courthouse, the son of William the Conqueror. The ghosts in this castle aren't exactly friendly either. There have been numerous reports of visitors being scratched, hit and pushed around the Keep, and there have been many whispers and chants heard echoing around the corridors. The Queen's Chamber is said to be one of the most haunted parts of the Keep where a lady is seen endlessly roaming around the room. The Poppy Girl was sentenced to prison in the Keep because she was supposedly unable to pay back her debts. She was raped in the prison and beaten to death by the male prisoners and it is said that she is often seen on the steps of the Keep and her presence is signified by the distinctive smell of flowers.
