5. Flying Hook Destroys Captain's Skull
Sailor Kevin Pender was bringing his boat into harbour on one of the Isles of Scilly. He attached what is known as a Hawser Hook to shore and prepared to disembark passengers. A sudden sharp wave, however, caused the boat to jolt up, stressing the rope and peeling the hook from its lodgings. It flew back and shattered his Cornish face. Pender fell into the water, where he was retrieved and dragged to safety. At this point, an onlooker saw that his right eye was dangling from its socket and smushed it back in. Unfortunately doctors couldn't save the eye. However, they did do an excellent reconstructive job of his head, considering the accident completely immolated a quarter of it. They literally had to peel his face off to operate, using past photos as a guide. Although toying with the classic eyepatch look, Kevin found himself greeted routinely with questions such as, "Where's your parrot?" A stereotype too raw for the hardened sea-dweller to endure. He now sports a glass eye.
