5. Athletes Who Care More About Others Than Their Goals

The life of an athlete is a one that is full of sacrifice. Training is their full time job and that takes priority over nights out, birthdays and anniversaries. They train in the early hours of the morning and then several more times during the day, they're on a strict diet and it's all so that they achieve their ultimate dreams and goals. Athletes train for years to get to where they want to be and some of them have let all of this go in order to help out a complete stranger. Cameron Lyle, a senior at college was the track and field star who was expected to do great things with his talent. He trained for eight years in order to reach his goal of winning the America East Championships which he was on track for. This was until he found out that he was a 100% bone marrow match for an anonymous twenty eight year old leukemia patient who was given just six months to live. Lyle retired to undergo surgery in order to help save the life of a complete stranger.

"I was surprised, I was pretty happy. I said yes right away. And then afterwards I thought about everything that that meant giving up, but I never had a second thought about donating. If I had said no, he wouldn't have had a match." - Lyle.

Lyle won the NCAA Award of valour after the surgery. Martin Passeri has earned the national Argentine Surf Championship five years in a row but was disqualified from the last competition for taking a disabled fan out on the water with him. Nicholás Gallegos was left paralysed after an accident he had at the age of eighteen. Just as Passeri was about to hit the waves, Gallegos tapped him on the shoulder, told him he was a fan and Passeri took him out on the water with him. He might not have won the competition, but he won the respect of a lot of people from across the world with his selfless decision.
