9 Acts Of Kindness From Total Strangers That Will Melt Your Heart

4. Katie Cutler And Her Fundraising Page

Whilst this is a specific example from the North East of England, there are thousands of people who are reaching out to those in need by setting up fundraising pages for them. Strangers from around the world can donate money in their name or anonymously in order to help out someone who needs it. Katie Cutler, a beautician from Newcastle in the North East of England became an internet sensation after she set up a fundraising page for fellow local, Alan Barnes, a disabled man who was robbed outside of his home. The muggers not only broke Mr Barnes' collarbone, but also damaged his confidence as he was frightened that it would happen again. The attack happened when Alan was putting out his bins. Alan has been disabled since birth and has grown up with people staring at him because he looks different to everyone else. He has lived his entire life with sight and growth problems but has recently became overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers. After his attack, Katie set a target of £500 to raise for Alan, but with over 20,000 donations that came pouring in from across the world, Alan has been able to buy a new house with the £330,000 that was raised in order to escape those horrific memories. Both Alan and Katie have been astonished by the amount of money raised by the public, and it just goes to show the power of the community who will work together in order to protect a one of their own. Whilst Alan may feel like another number walking down the street, the people of the North East recognise him and have responded in the most positive way possible.
"If you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us."
Katie received a BEM this year for her kindness towards Alan this year at the Queen's Birthday Honours.
