9 Fascinating Disney Attractions You Didn't Know Were Almost Built
4. S.S. Columbia Showcase Of Nautical Marvels
For all the many roller coasters and attractions out there, very few deal with the promise and perils of sea travel. One such place that does, however, is DisneySea in Tokyo, a subsection of the Tokyo Disney Report situated just outside the capital.
Tokyo DisneySea has an overarching nautical theme to it, and was once planned to house one of the most unique-sounding Disney rides ever. The ride was named the S.S. Columbia Showcase Of Nautical Marvels. The premise was that guests would board a huge, realistically-sized cruise ship, having booked passage to Europe across the Atlantic sea. The S.S. Columbia was supposedly a technological marvel, offering brand new stabilising technology.
Ride-goers would sit down in the ship for a demonstration of this “Gyroscopically-Stabilized” technology, only to have it break down and wreak havoc on the passengers. Guests seats would swing on a massive pendulum whereas the room would rotate three-hundred and sixty degrees. Combined, the effect of the ride was to disorientate rather than amaze, but the idea was shelved as Disney didn't think its technology was sophisticated enough.
