Another horrendous invention of the Vietnam War is the infamous napalm.

Although this incendiary weapon was used as far back as 1944 (or since ancient times if you count Greek Fire), it was made iconic during the Vietnam war, for all the wrong reasons.

It is essentially made up of a liquid fuel such as gasoline, and a gelling agent that causes it to stick to whatever it comes into contact with as it burns. If you were going to invent a weapon that was as purposefully painful and horrifying as you could possibly make it, it would be napalm.

As well as sticking to the skin and burning at 1,200°C (2,200°F), it also rapidly deoxygenates the surrounding air, creating an atmosphere of as much as 20% deadly carbon monoxide. It can also create self-perpetuating firestorms of up to 70 mph and a single firebomb can destroy and area of 2090 square metres.
