In his time as attorney general and then governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer managed to position himself as something of a liberal hero. When confidence in the economy and those controlling it was at a major low, Spitzer pursued cases against white collar criminals and investment bankers. He forged ahead with policy relating to marriage equality and migration reform. He generally seemed like a pretty chill dude. So it was something of disappointment to supporters when he was forced to resign as governor in 2008 due to having kind of a "thing" for prostitutes. An $80 000 thing. It turns out that during his years holding political office, Spitzer had run up quite the bill at the Emperors Club VIP, an illegal prostitution ring. This habit came to light after the IRS started to investigate his bank accounts due to fears that these strange money transfers were the result of extortion or identity theft. After the story broke and Spitzer resigned, it was discovered that some of the hotel rooms that Spitzer had allegedly used for his liaisons had been paid for by campaign funds, which only served to further shoot down his rising star. Perhaps the most damning of all though was the evidence offered by one call girl that Spitzer had kept his socks on during the act- black knee highs at that.
