It has always been thought that an unhappy marriage is always bad for your health, and it is in many way, but an unexpected result of a poor marriage is that it seems to be associated with a lowered risk of diabetes. So long as you're a man, that is.

A sociologist at Michigan State University looked at the survey data from 1,228 married couples over five years and found that, at the end of those five years, the men reporting lower marital satisfaction were at lower risk and it's thought that is is down to a stereotypical feature of marriage: The nagging wife.

The phenomenon that married men live longer than their single counterparts is thought to have many contributing factors, but the lowered risk of diabetes is thought to be a result of wives controlling and influencing the choices of their husband, and prodding them to manage any potential health problems. Whilst the men might find this nagging irritating, it does seem to be keeping them healthier.

So the next time someone starts nagging you, maybe consider that they might really have your best interests at heart.
