39. Duma Key
Duma Key follows the life of Edgar Freemantle after he is nearly killed in a work accident. In his pain, and following a messy divorce, he moves to Florida and becomes obsessed with his paintings as they seem to take on a life of their own.
The passages where Freemantle explains how to paint are refreshing and beautifully crafted, and the mysteries scattered throughout the tale are often engaging, but it's far too long to maintain its strong points.
