Game Of Thrones: Ranking George R.R. Martin's Westeros Books - Worst To Best

5. Tales Of Dunk And Egg €“ The Mystery Knight

Despite being charming in their own way, the vast majority of readers will only read the Tales Of Dunk And Egg series while waiting for the next A Song Of Ice And Fire instalment. In this way The Mystery Knight is the most successful of the three currently released tales, as it deals much more with politics, intrigue and murder than the other two, and so is a lot closer to the main series in tone. The story begins with Dunk and Egg discovering there is money to be made at a nearby wedding tournament, as the victor's prize is a dragon egg. Later, however, it introduces Walder Frey, dips into the Blackfyre rebellion and throws in bribery, theft and imprisonment amongst quite a lot else. The Mystery Knight is easily the most complex of the three tales, and goes a little way towards scratching the A Song Of Ice And Fire itch. It's got everything that an entry in the main series should have but without all of the plodding and filler. It may not be as exciting as reading about ASOIAF's main characters, but it also doesn't feel like a massive waste of potential. Comparing it to the frustration that comes from reading A Feast For Crows, The Mystery Knight comes out on top.
