Scotland's 10 Most Haunted Places

3. South Bridge Vaults, Edinburgh

Starting out as storage space for the exclusive shops built on top, the South Bridge Vaults were abandoned relatively early as they hadn't been waterproofed against Edinburgh's rainy climate. Soon they became the domain of the dregs of society who didn't have anywhere else to go, which also attracted the attention of some nefarious types not above exploitation. In time, the vaults were sealed up, but were rediscovered and opened to the public for tours after restoration. Shortly after the tours began, people began reporting some fairly bizarre instances. One girl was taken to hospital to be treated for shock after something invisible crept up behind her and yelled 'Get out'. Others have felt their legs being brushed by the friendly ghostly dog, and their hand being held by Jack, the little boy who vanished in the vaults. In Vault 5, the Black Lady glowers jealously at women, whilst her room-mate, The Cobbler carries on his work, watching people come and go. Perhaps the scariest ghost is Mr Boots - an ex-landlord with a penchant for murder - who creeps up behind tourists, breathing ominously down their necks.
