10 Things You Do That You Didn't Know Ruin Your Life
9. Vegetarian/Veganism
Despite the propensity for vegans to label themselves "all natural", there are actually no traditional cultures that practice veganism. It's just not natural. There are actually many cultures, such as Masai, Yupik and Inuit (although less so in the Kalaallit culture) that subsist almost exclusively on animal products, largely because the Arctic tundra and African plains are not too great for crop cultivation. The study of traditional, native and relatively "undeveloped" cultures is a pretty good way to get an idea of how our human ancestors lived, as practices in many of these cultures have remained unchanged for thousands of years. On top of this, they are generally still subject to more survival pressures that arise from living in the "natural" world. There are some vegetarian groups that argue that human biology was designed for a planet-based diet, pointing to our grinding back teeth as evidence and merrily ignoring our canines and incisors. Not to mention the fact that our stomachs produce hydrochloric acid, something not found in herbivores. Nope, I'm afraid that we are simply supposed to eat meat, evolutionarily speaking. Hey, look, there are plenty of other reasons to go veggie, you do you and all that. I'm not calling these practices "unnatural" in the same way a Texan governor gets wigged out by the idea of boys kissing boys, I'm just saying that these are choices that we are now able to make since humans began freeing themselves from a great many evolutionary pressures.
