10 Things You Do That You Didn't Know Ruin Your Life

6. Eat Cake

Well, duh. Of course cake isn't natural. What I really mean is the combination of ingredients in cake, namely fat and sugar, is so unnatural that it does some weird stuff to our brains. We often hear that the reason we're getting too fat is due to the high levels of fat or sugar in our diets. Which one of these that you think is the main culprit largely comes down to which side of the Atlantic you live on, with the American belief that sugar is the devil and the British/European tendency to think that fat is to blame. Actually, neither of those is causing it on its own, it's only when you combine them that you get a problem. If you think about it, your average person wouldn't eat a whole block of butter or a bag of sugar on its own, but combine them together and you have delicious buttercream, which many people could completely polish off. The fat/sugar combo isn't found anywhere in nature and, as such, neither is addictive on its own. Most animals, humans included, will only eat as much as they need and stop, whereas, when mixed together, they have a similar effect on the brain as cocaine. We just haven't evolved to be able to handle them together and, as a result, it sends the reward centres of our brains haywire, creating addiction. Yep, you read that right, buttercream is basically crack.
