In many ways, Oy is the emotional core of the group and even proves himself to be an integral member. He is one of the latter inductees to the Tet, but ultimately becomes the last one to stick with Roland on his quest for the tower, and all this despite not even being human.
Oy is a Billy-Bumbler who encounters the Tet after being pushed away by his pack. The Bumbler can imitate and speak some broken human English - something that is noted as a possible reason for his unpopularity with his kind.
He proves himself to be instrumental in the group, with Roland and Jake even coming to see him more like a human than an animal. It is his relationship with Jake that genuinely drives the emotional core of this character, as the bond that the two share is far greater than a simple pet and owner relationship.
Spoilers lie ahead as the ultimate demise of this character acts as one of the most emotional moments within the entire series.
Oy's sacrifice and loyalty to Roland is heart-breaking and proves his importance, and he only ranks lower as his animalistic limitations don't allow for quite as much development.
