The Science Of Scary: 10 Reasons Why You Love Being Scared

Watching a horror film burns almost 200 calories, for starters.

Hey, who doesn't love getting their spook on? For some reason, most people just can't get enough of being scared. Which is weird when you think about it.

Ask most people what their ideal life looks like and you'll probably be treated to a vision of a nice house with roses around the door and some beautiful sprogs playing under a clear, blue sky. It probably doesn't include any mad axe-murderers, ghosts, demons or disembowelment.

So why, oh why do we seem to enjoy the idea of watching someone else being disemboweled by a mad axe murderer/ghost/demon whilst we scarf down popcorn and shriek with terror?

There has actually been a fair amount of research into why we seem to love getting the bejesus scared out of us and, as well as being a good excuse for scientists to watch horror movies at work, they've also come up with some interesting answers ranging from why screams are scary to whether its possible for someone to be actually scared to death.
