Universal Orlando Resort Mardi Gras Food
WhatCulture

The New Orleans booth was always going to be the biggest of the booths at Mardi Gras International Flavors of Carnaval and this year it's been split into two with the savoury dishes getting their own booth and desserts another.

At the savoury booth there was plenty of dishes for seafood lovers including Crawfish Étouffée, Shrimp & Crawfish Boil and Shrimp Gumbo. Whilst for meat eaters and vegans alike there was Chicken & Andouille Jambalaya and Fried Green Tomato Po'Boy.

At this booth we decided to try two of the most expensive dishes including the Shrimp & Crawfish Boil at $14.49 and the $12.49 vegan Fried Green Tomato Po'Boy. We had mixed experiences of them.

The Shrimp & Crawfish Boil is the most expensive food item we tried and we were definitely happy with the amount of food the item came with. This was a huge portion with plenty of shellfish and two good sized corn on the cob pieces. Unfortunately the shellfish was overcooked and dry. The flavours were tasty and had the crawfish and shrimp been less dry this would have tasted good, but overall we were a little bit disappointed.

The Fried Green Tomato Po'Boy was a completely different story. A huge portion, complete with cajun chips, was tasty and full of flavour. This was dish was a winner and at $12.49 was excellent value for money.

Universal Orlando Resort Mardi Gras King Cake
WhatCulture

This booth has the classic sweet flavours of Mardi Gras with both a King Cake and Beignets so we of course had to get both.

The King Cake was $6.99 and was a good size. Complete with the lucky baby in the middle, we thought the King Cake was a highlight of the food at the event. Not dry at all and the perfect mixture of sweet with spices, this traditional cake is a must try.

Beignets are as synonymous with New Orleans as Universal is to movies, the pair are a match made in heaven. Priced at $6.99 for a bag of 4, this was good value. We love beignets and the sugary morsels are always a good idea in our opinion.
