What If You Only EVER Ate Fruit?

1. The Issue Of Orthorexia Nervosa

When the YouTubers, ’Fit Shortie Eats,’ claimed that fruitarianism was a powerful cure for all eating disorders, they forgot to include the possibility of getting Orthorexia Nervosa, which has been speculated by the Health Promotion Program at Columbia to be a possible symptom of a strictly fruit-based diet. While Anorexia Nervosa can be defined as a disorder in which individuals refuse to eat in order to lose weight, Orthorexia Nervosa is the obsession to only eat the ‘right’ things.

As fruitarianism is such a restrictive diet, orthorexia is a possible side effect due to the limitations of choice. When caught up in an exclusively fruit-based diet, individual practitioners may view all other food sources as damaging and unhealthy. This creates a harmful relationship with food and can cause followers of the diet to have detrimental results.

Nutritionists continue to promote the idea of variety as a basis for a healthy, sustainable diet. Whether that includes meat and dairy is optional, and it is apparent that you can be a healthy omnivore just as much as you can be an unhealthy herbivore. What does seem apparent though, is that other than eating nothing but fruits for a short period of time, it can be disastrous to your health.
