9 Things That Sound Like Insane Hoaxes But Aren't

6. Woman Jumps From Empire State Building ... And Survives

On December 2nd, 1979, Elvita Adams went to the top of the Empire State Building, climbed a seven-foot spiked fence, and jumped. This is usually the end of the story for most people, but Elvita survived. She wasn't constructed out of Adamantium, neither did she sprout wings, but as she leapt from the 86th floor, a strong gust of wind blew her back in through the 85th floor window (presumably to the shock of the people on the 85th floor). She came away with nothing more serious than a broken hip. She was taken to a mental institution to recover and receive therapy and, although her whereabouts are currently unknown, she was the subject of a stand-up comedy show in 2010. Is that in bad taste? We can't decide.
