Yves Saint Laurent: 10 Most Definitive Collections
3. 1979 - Pablo Picasso Inspired Collection
The final year of the 1970s Saint-Laurent paid tribute to Pablo Picasso and Sergei Diaghilev the founder of the Ballet Russes. The strong female form was back with signature YSL telltale signs of square shoulders on a powerful skirt suit in tones of blues panels and rust toned diamond print. The Harlequin print carried through onto full-length skirts in purples and turquoises. Picasso couture arrived in 50s style dresses a Stepford wife would be proud to have in her immaculate wardrobe. Picassos abstract style was worked onto day dresses in effervescent orange and sky blue floor-length gowns with multi-coloured applique. Art was once again taken from the galleries and put onto the stark white runways in YSLs headquarters.
