Yves Saint Laurent: 10 Most Definitive Collections

4. 1977 - Chinese And Opium

One year on from his Landmark Russian collection, his following autumn winter 1977 collection drew inspiration from the Orient. The Chinese creations set the tone for his imminent perfume launch, Opium, which is still vastly popular today with it top notes of Mandarin and Jasmine. Incorporating lavish velvet capes, mink trimmed coats, satin dresses, Kimonos and empress dresses with heavily detailed in Asian details. The colour palette for the ensembles was vibrant and intense reds, which is a symbol of happiness, joy and brings luck, orange which represents change, spontaneity and strength, and pink, which symbolises love in the Chinese beliefs. This collection of Asian persuasion has gone down as one of Saint-Laurent€™s greatest achievements.
