Zodiac Case: Every Suspect That Was Seriously Considered
4. Gary Francis Poste
Vast swathes of armchair detectives love putting forward their own theories and demanding they be considered with the same legitimacy as official investigations. But sometimes there is some credence to the work done by civilians; many of the Zodiac's ciphers were cracked by readers of the newspapers in which they were published, or amateur sleuths fascinated by the case.
However, there are those that take their detective hobby incredibly seriously. The Casebreakers are one such group, touting expertise from retired FBI and law enforcement as part of their 40-strong team of volunteers, who make a hobby out of solving the unsolved.
The Casebreakers claim Gary Francis Poste as responsible for the Zodiac killings. Their evidence is largely based on a theory that Poste had a scar on his forehead which matches that of a Zodiac composit sketch. They also say using his name to decipher Zodiac codes reveals alternative messages.
Official law enforcement has not looked kindly on the Casebreakers' theories, refusing to comment on the still ongoing case or test Poste's DNA against any on file. In return, the Casebreakers have spoken openly against investigators for what they see as gross negligence. It's a messy situation, which leaves us without any official ruling regarding Poste.
