With Randy Orton's challenge for WWE Champion Kofi Kingston now made official for SummerSlam, it's pretty much guaranteed that it won't close the show.

While the WWE Championship was at one time far and away the richest prize in the company, that status has come into question a bit. With greater emphasis being put on the Universal Championship, and the rise of the Women's Evolution, there're a lot of championship matches that can claim they deserve the honor of closing events.

The last time the WWE Championship was fought over in the closing match was all the way back on 17 February at Elimination Chamber when then-champion Daniel Bryan successfully defended the strap against AJ Styles, Jeff Hardy, Samoa Joe, Randy Orton, and Kofi Kingston. The last time the WWE Championship closed SummerSlam was 2014 when Brock Lesnar decimated John Cena. Lesnar has closed every SummerSlam since.
