10 Biggest Sporting Failures Of 2012

2. The French Football Team

france euro 2012 They went into Euro 2012 as the dark horse and left as the tournament donkey. Once again the French camp descended into anarchy at a major tournament, something the press was quick to seize upon. After an impressive qualifying campaign under new boss Laurent Blanc pundits were tipping Les Bleus to cause an upset in Poland and Ukraine. However Blanc's boys stumbled threw the group stages, finishing runners up to the un-fancied England. In the next round they faced Spain, the holders and favourites, surely now they would live up to their billing? The answer was a clear and definitive no. The French were limp and lacklustre in their display, offering very little in the way of resistance to Spain. It was a damp and tepid ending to what many had thought would have been one of the games of the tournament.

1. Arsene Wenger

If anyone has become the British press' number target it is Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman once again failed to win a trophy in the 2011 - 2012 season and many hoped this would bring about a period of mass spending by the Gunners. However Arsenal proceeded to sell two of their star players, Robin Van Persie and Alex Song. To make matters worse, the Dutchman moved to Manchester United. The 2012 - 2013 season has begun in similar fashion for Wenger, with the latest failure being an embarrassing defeat to League Two Bradford in the League Cup. For the first time during his reign the professor is starting to lose the support from the terraces. This has already been a year of failure for Wenger, could it be topped off by him losing his job?
