When Claudio Ranieri was unceremoniously sacked in February 2017, Mourinho was quick to show his support for his fallen comrade, even wearing the Italian's initials on his Manchester United training top and talking about him at length in press conferences.

Mourinho bemoaned the knee-jerk nature of the modern game, complaining that a man who should have a team's stadium named after him had been sacked less than a year after pulling off the most unbelievable title win in English football history. This was a far cry from Mourinho's previous statements on the man he was so quick to call his 'amico'.

In 2004, the Manchester United boss had described Ranieri as a 'loser' who would never with anything with then-club Chelsea. In 2008 he added, "Ranieri has the mentality of someone who doesn't need to win. He is almost 70 years old. He has won a Supercup and another small trophy and he is too old to change his mentality".

Mourinho said Ranieri had been in England for five years and could barely say 'good morning' so how could he ever be expected to achieve anything in the Premier League. Except that he did. He won the league title. Off you, Jose. Strange days, indeed.
