Being the best footballer on the planet comes at a price. You will be the first thought on every opposing manager and team's minds when they play you and, if they think they can't subdue you tactically then they're going to foul you. Over and over again.

Containing Lionel Messi is akin to trying to trap mercury as Asier Del Horno discovered in a Champions League knock-out match back in 2006. Messi had spent the early parts of the game frustrating the Spanish left-back and ended up being body-checked to the floor by his opposing number. Del Horno was quickly shown the red card and Chelsea would go on to lose the game.

Mourinho was incensed, claiming that the Argentine was a culture vulture who was letting his artistic interests leak onto the pitch. When asked about the incident he said, "Barcelona is a cultural city with many great theatres and this boy has learned very well".

Messi failed to win an Oscar at that year's Academy Awards and, instead, we got an early glimpse of what would soon become Jose's trademark managerial meltdowns.
