Twitter philosopher, mediocre midfielder, and human controversy magnet Joey Barton has made plenty of enemies throughout his career. The Scouser once stubbed a cigarette out on Man City youth player Jamie Tandy's eye, warred with fellow clogger Karl Henry on the pitch and off, and called PSG defender Thiago Silver a "ladyboy" during his time with Marseille.

These incidents are beyond reproach, but Barton's clash with Ousmane Dabo, who he teamed with at City, is probably his most disgraceful. The two were involved in an altercation at City's training ground, and the Frenchman was brutalised, suffering multiple head injuries including a suspected detached retina. According to Dabo, Barton constantly struck him in the face while he was down on the floor, but Joey has maintained that Ousmane was the aggressor.

The extent of the beating was revealed as soon as Dabo emerged in public with a face covered in bruises and one eye swollen shut. Barton was charged with assault in the aftermath, and signed with Newcastle the following month. He left with a six-match ban, £25,000 fine, and suspended four-month prison sentence, and while Barton tried to reinvent himself as a positive role model in the aftermath, nobody bought the act.
