10 Football Teams That Over-Performed In 2019/20
9. Coventry City
The turn of the 21st century saw a sharp downturn in the fortunes of Coventry City. Having been in the top flight for 33 consecutive seasons until the 2000/01 season, they finished 19th and slipped into the Championship.
In the last decade, Coventry fell as low as League Two - the fourth tier of football in England - in the 2017/18 season.
Few would have expected that just two seasons later they would be securing the League One title to gain promotion back to the Championship.
Coventry have been forced to rely heavily on the players they can produce and smart recruitment from the surrounding leagues as opposed to any lavish spending. Key performers such as Jordan Shipley, Fankaty Dabo, Marko Marosi and Kyle McFadzean were regular staples of the side with the total cost of the entire squad being little over £1,000,000. They also had the 5th lowest wage bill in the entire league in the 19/20 season.
The Sky Blues conceded a mightily impressive 30 goals in 34 games before the league was unanimously terminated early due to the pandemic, though their goal output will certainly have to improve if they wish to stay in the Championship.
