10 Football Teams That Over-Performed In 2019/20
8. Willem II
Before the last decade, Willem II had been an unsteady Eredivisie side with finishes ranging from 7th to 17th, but it was in the 2010/11 season that they were relegated to the second tier.
Following a yo-yo period they have slowly been rising through the ranks of the top flight, and this season they exceeded all expectations by finishing in 5th place above Utrecht and Vitesse.
This has earned them their first chance to play in European competition since 2005/06.
A large part of this surge in results can be put down to their incredible recruitment. The likes of Che Nunnelly and Mats Kohlert have been brought in for minimal to zero transfer fees and have lit up the wings whilst Swedish international Sebastian Holmen has helped to shore up the defence.
Willem II have long been a great talent producer with the likes of Sami Hyypia, Marc Overmars and Virgil van Dijk all emerging from the Tilburg-based club.
Going through something of a purple patch in their recruitment and academy, with stellar performances from promising young talent, Willem II will be hoping to build upon this success.
