10 Football Teams That Over-Performed In 2019/20
6. Pordenone
Pordenone have pulled off a mighty feat in the 2019/20 season, finishing 4th in Serie B in their first-ever tenure in the competition.
The club finished 18th in the Serie C as recently as 2014/15, so to say this was completely unexpected is an understatement.
With a club boasting an entirely Italian roster, the minnows finished just 10 points outside of the automatic promotion spots and fought valiantly in the play-offs, losing out to Frosinone.
Pordenone relied on a combination of ageing talent and smart loan acquisitions. They featured the third oldest squad in the league and seven loanees played at least half of the available league games.
These are possibly the least stable building blocks for further success, and so they will need to address both of these issues sooner rather than later.
It will also be vital to retain the services of current manager Attilio Tesser who, in his two seasons in charge of The Green Lizards, has seen them lift the Serie C title and earn the club's highest-ever finish in the domestic leagues.
Another interesting stat: they have spent just £180,000 on transfers in the last 15 years, and that was on just one player.
