10 Football Teams That Over-Performed In 2019/20
7. Alanyaspor
The last decade has witnessed the club progress from 14th in the 2. Lig Beyaz (third tier) in 2010/11 to 5th in the Super Lig in 2019/20. Incredible stuff.
They also came within touching distance of their first piece of silverware, reaching the Turkiye Kupasi final before losing 2-0 to Trabzonspor.
With Europa League football to look forward to this season, let's have a look at just who Alanyaspor are.
Though their sky-high league position can partially be put down to the woes of Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce (who finished 6th and 7th respectively) let us take nothing away from their squad and manager.
Unlike many of their counterparts that feature ageing players snatched from the traditional top five European leagues, Alanyaspor has kept much of its transfer policy to within Turkey and surrounding nations.
The only name you will be likely to recognise in their squad is former Liverpool loanee Steven Caulker.
Erol Bulut led the team to Europa League qualification in his only season in charge - having moved to Fenerbahce in early August 2020 - and now former Besiktas assistant Cagdas Atan will be assuming the role.
Time will tell if he can keep the good times rolling.
