10 Football Teams That Over-Performed In 2019/20
5. Famalicao
Having been playing in the 5th tier of Portuguese football as recently as 08/09, Famalicao have had a truly meteoric rise, though this one is a little more obvious as to why.
At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, the majority share in the club was bought out by Quantum Pacific Group, who also owns a third of shares in Atletico Madrid.
They returned to the second division in 2015 where they spent four years fighting for promotion to finally return to Liga NOS after a 2nd placed finish in 2018/19. In 2019/20 they achieved a 6th place finish, just one point away from a Europa League qualifying round position.
With former Hull, Watford and Everton assistant manager Joao Pedro Sousa in charge of the first team for the 2019/20 season, it is safe to say that his time working under Marco Silva has served him well.
Famalicao are an impressive attacking side, with their front three of Diogo Goncalves, Fabio Martins and Toni Martinez obtaining a total of 55 goals and assists between them in all competitions.
Considering Goncalves and Martins were only on loan, the club will be hoping to either retain their services permanently or will need to do some smart spending this window.
