10 Great Footballers Who Made Terrible Managers

9. Alan Shearer

Alan Shearer is one of the greatest English strikers ever, for Blackburn, Southampton and Newcastle his scoring record was incredible and he finished his career as the Premier League's highest ever goalscorer. Whilst he won very few team honours as a player, his status as an icon of English football is undoubted, despite his abysmal punditry on Match of the Day. It was a surprise when Shearer was named manager of the club where he was idolised as Newcastle, trapped in a relegation fight should have been looking for experience to replace the ill Joe Kinnear. Instead they went for the surreal fan favourite option in the form of a man who had no prior experience at management at any level. Shearer had nine games to save the club from relegation and just 5 points out of 24 later, they were relegated to the Championship. The appointment of Shearer topped off one of the worst seasons in the club's history and unsurprisingly, Shearer has not been seen in management since.
