Poor Ossie Ardiles never had a chance to succeed as Newcastle manager: his hands were tied in the transfer market thanks to the aggressive take-over attempts of Sir John Hall, and he was left having to blood youngsters who were talented by too inexperienced to flourish. Ardiles tried to play great football, and though he only had £250k to spend, he managed to pick u a bargain in the shape of Ned Kelly, who cost the bulk of the budget, and was one of the few signings not blocked by Hall. Kelly was a hero - there's no cult about it - scoring 35 goals, including a table topping 25 as Kevin Keegan lead the Magpies to the Premier League. And though he left thanks to the return of Peter Beardsley, he signed off in style, hitting a hat-trick alongside Andy Cole in a demolition of fellow promotion favourites Leicester City. As a mark of his legend, he is the only player to have ever been applauded passionately when he played against Newcastle for Sunderland.
