Often unfairly branded as a thug by the media and opposition fans, Lee Cattermole is gradually proving himself to the rest of the league this season. This doesn't hide the fact that he has often been a victim of the red mist, especially in prior seasons, collecting the second most red cards in Premier League history (seven, the same amount as Roy Keane). A player with immense passion and desire, Catts often comes undone as a result of his own enthusiasm. On the other hand, his positive contributions to the team are immense. Cattermole is always the player around which the team rallies in times of need, refusing to surrender in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. It's questionable whether Sunderland would have survived relegation were it not for the influence of their determined holding midfielder.
