Better known now for his excitable radio commentary, 'Benno' was a legendary centre back who captained the club for three of his eleven years at Roker Park. A strong and imposing figure, Bennett's best remembered altercation came in 1989, in a League Cup game against Coventry City. David Speedie, a player with a tendency to wind up his opponents with sneaky kicks, raced into a 50/50 challenge with his studs up. He collided with Bennett's thigh and immediately looked away to feign innocence. The Sunderland man immediately sprang up and grabbed him by this throat, pushing him over the advertising hoarding into the front row. Eventually he was dragged away by teammates, but couldn't escape a red card. Thankfully for the Black Cats, Speedie was sent off too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU8Lwixj6mk
