10 Most Humiliating World Cup Defeats

8. Bulgaria 2-1 Germany

Diether Endlicher/AP/Press Association ImagesDiether Endlicher/AP/Press Association ImagesGermany may well have inflicted abject humiliation on Brazil in last night's one-sided semi-final in Belo Horizonte, but the European side have been on the wrong end of an embarrassing defeat or two themselves over the years. With the likes of England and France failing to qualify for the 1994 World Cup, Europe's eyes were on Germany, one of the favourites to win the competition. The Germans came through their group without much fuss, seeing off the likes of Bolivia and South Korea and tying with Spain before beating Belgium in the last-16. In the quarter-finals, they faced Bulgaria, and were expected to make light work of their opponents who had only qualified for the tournament by the skin of their teeth and had never won a World Cup match in their history prior to 1994. But they won this one. Lothar Matthäus had earlier put Germany 1-0 up from the penalty spot, but a wonderful Hristo Stoichkov free-kick fifteen minutes from time, and a last-gasp Iordan Letchkov header, astonishingly sent Bulgaria through to the semi-finals as Germany were dumped out of the competition in unceremonious fashion.
