10 Most Humiliating World Cup Defeats

7. France 0-1 Senegal

Neal Simpson/EMPICS SportNeal Simpson/EMPICS SportSenegal shocked France and the footballing community as a whole when they won the opening game of the 2002 World Cup against the World and European champions. France had dominated the international scene over the previous four years, and against Senegal fielded a squad of star players such as Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and David Trezeguet. However, the wonderfully-named Papa Bouba Diop upstaged France's ensemble cast of global icons when, after just half an hour, the midfielder capitalised on a misunderstanding between Emmanuel Petit and Fabien Barthez to steal in and score what proved to be the winning goal. France rallied, and hit the woodwork twice, but failed to find a way past their African opponents who held on to record one of the most embarrassing defeats in France's recent history.
