10 Lessons Learned From UFC Fight Night: Mousasi vs. Souza

4. Alistair Overeem Is Done As A Viable Contender

Overeem Talk about a bust: the hulking Dutchman Alistair Overeem was a huge signing for the UFC just a few years ago, and came in with a ton of hype. However, his first win was tainted by a drug test dodging scandal, and was tainted further when he failed a drug test just months after the fight, though the NSAC allowed him to keep the win. He then went on to lose two fights to "lesser" competition in Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (a cocky display by Overeem had him caught with his hands down) and Travis Browne, before tenderizing Frank Mir for three rounds to notch his second win in the UFC. Friday against Big Ben Rothwell, Overeem was favoured to win. For a guy who was considered a title lock at one point, it's a fight he should have won easily. Instead, a counter punch connected over the top and hit flush with the top of Overeem's head, the behemoth went down, and he drops to 2-3 in the UFC. The problem here is that Overeem makes upwards of $200,000 just to show up to a fight in the UFC, and he hasn't been worth the money, unless you happen to enjoy watching chemically enhanced bodies fall to the mat hard. This is the end of the road for him as a contender in the UFC. They could book him into a match with the loser of Hunt vs. Big Country next month, but it's likely that even the loser of that bout detroys Overeem. It could be that we've seen the last of The Reem in the UFC, and if he's cut, expect him to show up in Bellator under old boss Scott Coker at some point.
