Ledley King will always be worshiped by Spurs fans, but there is a real danger of general football fans forgetting just how good he was. During his career England had an astonishingly secure defence, with Terry, Ferdinand, Campbell and Carragher all ready to step into the fray, and there's still a suspicion that King was better than all of them.

A one-club man, he made his debut in 1999 as a midfielder, before dropping into defence and retaining that technical ability. It wasn't long before his performances marked him out as one of the league's bright stars, and he was capped for England in 2002. Unfortunately injuries plagued him from the very beginning.

For most of his career, King's knees were so fragile he was unable to train: he'd play beautifully for 90 minutes, then be wrapped in cotton wool. Often he couldn't even manage that.

Respected players have agreed King's achievements were remarkable under the circumstances, as he was Tottenham's best player for over a decade on just one leg.
