The Arsenal back four of the late 80s and 90s is generally considered one of the finest defensive set-ups in British history: Dixon, Adams, Keown and Winterburn. But, actually, Steve Bould played a considerable part and rarely gets the recognition he deserves. Currently a defensive coach at Arsenal, they're looking more organised now Bould is working on them, and it's not hard to understand why.

Making almost 300 appearances for The Gunners between '88 and '99, Bould was a defender of real substance. He didn't take free kicks like David Luiz but he did read the game, organise the defence and dominate in the air.

It was this ability which helped the Arsenal back line become the finest of its era, yet people often forget the part he played. While Keown got the England caps, it was more often Steve Bould who partnered Adams in central defence, and in the double winning season of 97/98 he was probably the most consistent performer.

Unfortunately it seems you can win every trophy going and still get forgotten about.
