10 Most Notorious Long Bans In Football History

8. Paolo Di Canio - Eleven Games

Youtube.comYoutube.comLet's face it, Paolo Di Canio is no stranger to controversy: his political views had already earned him a lot of column inches during his time in Italy, and when he arrived in England with Sheffield Wednesday, he picked up a pretty groundbreaking ban. He was a real fan favourite during his time in Sheffield, but he wasn't as popular with authoritative figures, especially after the most notorious moment in his starry, storied career. During a match between Wednesday and Arsenal in 1998, Di Canio was sent off by referee Paul Alcock for an incident that he clearly didn't believe was worthy of the punishment. Incensed, the Italian decided to channel his inner professional wrestler and shoved Alcock to the floor. It's possible that the referee's reaction was a little over the top - and frankly hilarious in its execution - but it was no laughing matter for the Football Association, who hit Di Canio with an 11-match ban for his behaviour. He was also suspended by Wednesday for the incident, but unlike Luis Suarez, the Italian did learn from his mistakes, and went on to subsequently win a Fair Play award for stopping play when an opposition 'keeper was prone, rather than scoring.
