10 Player Spurs Shouldn't Have Got Rid Of

5. Jermain Defoe

Spurs sold Jermain Defoe to Toronto FC in MLS in January of 2014 - and it's no surprise that they have struggled for goals ever since. Defoe's departure was shocking for two reasons; the first being that he was still perfectly capable of scoring in the Premier League (indeed, he still looked likely to notch every time he took to the pitch) and the second being the destination of his departure. In two spells at White Hart Lane, Defoe scored an impressive 91 Premier League goals in 182 starts and became Spurs' top scorer in European competition, having scored 23 to take him above Martin Chivers on 22. He is also Spurs' fifth highest goalscorer in all competitions of all time. Despite being 31 when he left Spurs, Defoe was still quick, sprightly, fit and deadly in front of goal. He should never have been allowed to leave.
