10 Players Who Didn't Fulfil Their Potential At Man City

7. Rodney Marsh

Rodney Marsh was a controversial footballer and has continued this abruptness into his role as a pundit. He was an impressive midfielder for QPR and helped them achieve back-to-back promotions in the early 1970s before moving to Manchester City in 1972. His transfer fee of £200,000, equivalent to around £22 million today, was huge at the time, and much was expected of the tricky midfielder but he failed to deliver. City already had a strong team and sat on top of the First Division table at the time of his arrival. But the manager felt something was missing and so brought in Marsh to fill a gap in the squad. However, far from strengthening the squad he appeared to have the opposite effect and brought division to the changing room. City claimed just eight points from their last eight games and slumped from first to finish fourth. Marsh's team mates were not afraid to point the finger of blame, with Neil Young saying
"Rodney cost us the league, there's no doubt about it. He unsettled the team. Somebody would give him the ball and I'd make a run ready to collect it in the box and it would never arrive. I'd turn around and he would be juggling it like a bloody seal."
Marsh went on to make 118 league appearances for City and scored just 36 goals, a much more sedate record than the one he had at QPR. After leaving City he did go on to have some success in the USA, but he certainly be remembered by City fans as the player that cost them the league title in 1972.
